Scrum.org adds Product Backlog Refinement microlearning

Scrum.org has added a self-paced microlearning course, Product Backlog Refinement, to its online learning platform. The course was created with Prowareness Academy.

The course focuses on Product Backlog refinement, which Scrum.org describes as an ongoing activity within Scrum. It aims to help Scrum teams facilitate and participate in refinement sessions and apply refinement techniques together.

According to the organisation, the material covers ways to maintain a healthy, useful Product Backlog. Learners are introduced to techniques including slicing, story mapping and the use of spikes, alongside guidance on how and when to involve stakeholders.

The course is intended for Product Owners, Scrum Masters, Developers, product managers, project managers and people in similar roles. Delivered online, it can be completed at the learner's own pace, either in one sitting or over a longer period.

The programme takes about one hour to complete. Students work through reading materials, videos, interactive activities and quizzes, and receive a certificate of completion at the end.

Course focus

Product Backlog refinement is not a formal Scrum event, but it remains a routine part of how many teams prepare work and reduce uncertainty before sprint planning. The subject has become a practical concern for teams seeking to improve the quality and clarity of backlog items before development starts.

Miriam Blommers, Professional Scrum Trainer at Prowareness and a co-creator of the course, said the training was designed as an introduction to that work.

"The Product Backlog is an ever-changing artifact that requires frequent inspection and if that doesn't occur, the value of what is being built can be diminished," Blommers said.

"We built the Product Backlog Refinement microlearning course as a primer to help Scrum Team Members understand the importance of refinement and develop skills and techniques to inspect and adapt the Product Backlog to generate valuable results for their organizations," she added.

The collaboration also reflects a broader push by training providers to package narrower topics into shorter online modules rather than longer classroom-based courses. In this case, the new module forms part of Scrum.org's self-paced learning offer and has been endorsed by the organisation.

Platform expansion

Scrum.org's endorsed training courses are developed with Agile specialists and reviewed by its instructional design team. The organisation presents them as a way for learners to build practical skills through shorter online formats.

Dave West, Chief Executive Officer of Scrum.org, said refinement is often overlooked by teams even though it shapes later planning work.

"While refinement is not a formal Scrum event, it is an essential practice that teams should not ignore. Many Scrum Teams struggle to make time for it, or treat it as an afterthought, which often shows up later as unclear or poorly sized items in Sprint Planning. It is critical to refine the Product Backlog to enable value delivery," West said.

He also linked the launch to the organisation's wider online training catalogue.

"We are very excited to endorse this new microlearning course and add it to our platform of self-paced training courses. It dives deep into a very important topic, with a very small time commitment for students. We are looking forward to releasing more courses like this in the future as we continue to build out our online learning platform," he said.

Scrum.org was founded by Scrum co-creator Ken Schwaber and describes itself as a mission-based organisation focused on helping teams solve complex problems through Professional Scrum. Its offering includes instructor-led training, self-paced courses, certifications and learning resources for practitioners at different stages of experience.

Prowareness Academy works in Agile training and says it combines formal learning methods with practical experience from coaches and consultants working with organisations. Its involvement in the new module places it alongside Scrum.org in a market where specialist learning providers are increasingly shaping short-form professional education for software and product teams.

The Product Backlog Refinement course is now available through Scrum.org's online platform and takes around an hour to complete.
