Foxit and Access Strategy Group have partnered to launch Access Pro for PDF accessibility work, aimed at organisations that need to make digital documents readable for people with disabilities.

Access Pro is available within Foxit PDF Editor and PDF Editor+. It lets users edit PDFs, audit accessibility, remediate issues, validate compliance and certify documents in a single workflow.

The partnership targets a longstanding problem for large institutions with extensive document archives in formats that do not work properly with screen readers or other assistive technology. In sectors such as healthcare, higher education and financial services, those archives can run to hundreds of thousands of files, creating backlogs that many organisations struggle to clear.

Foxit already includes accessibility features in its PDF software. Access Pro extends those capabilities into remediation and certification work, which is often handled through a mix of different tools and outside specialists.

The issue has grown more urgent as legal and regulatory scrutiny of inaccessible digital content has increased. The companies cited figures showing that nearly 50 million adults in the US report at least some trouble seeing, meaning inaccessible PDFs can block access to lab results, benefit notices, financial disclosures and education documents.

Compliance pressure

Public bodies and organisations receiving certain federal funding face deadlines to bring digital content into line with WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards. Legal risk is also rising, with accessibility lawsuits in US federal courts increasing year on year, according to data cited by the companies.

For businesses and institutions with large archives, the cost of non-compliance can rise quickly. Courts can treat inaccessible PDFs as accessibility violations, and settlements may be followed by requirements to remediate entire document libraries.

Access Strategy Group says it has worked on archive remediation projects for 10 of the largest healthcare providers, 50 of the top universities and three of the largest US financial institutions. That work now forms part of the new arrangement with Foxit, which provides the document software platform.

Megan Carey outlined the scale of the problem facing many organisations.

"The organizations we serve in healthcare, higher education and financial services hold document archives measured in the hundreds of thousands, and every inaccessible file is both a person shut out and a liability on the books. We've fixed this one archive at a time for years. Building Access Pro on Foxit's platform lets our specialists audit, remediate and certify in one place, at the scale of the problem," said Megan Carey, Chief Revenue Officer, Access Strategy Group.

The launch also reflects a broader shift in document software, with accessibility becoming an operational requirement rather than a specialist compliance task. Organisations often have accessibility policies, but the work of checking, repairing and certifying files can be fragmented across departments and suppliers.

By combining editing and remediation in one platform, the companies aim to reduce that fragmentation. The offering is intended to help teams manage documents from creation through compliance checks without moving files across multiple systems.

Andrew Travis said Foxit sees accessibility as part of how documents are structured and used across organisations.

"Foxit's PDF solutions support all types of businesses, knowledge workers and end-users. We believe everyone who receives a document should be able to read it. Our commitment to accessibility extends beyond feature sets like tagging and structure. The same qualities that make a document accessible make it intelligent, findable and ready for the systems enterprises run on. ASG has made this real inside hospitals, universities and financial institutions for years. This partnership brings Access Pro together with our platform at enterprise scale," said Andrew Travis, Chief Revenue Officer, Foxit.
