Canva integrates design tools with ChatGPT for seamless creativity
Canva has announced the integration of its design creation and editing capabilities directly within ChatGPT, enabled by the Canva MCP Server.
This development allows ChatGPT's large weekly user base - estimated at 700 million people - to access visual design tools using natural language prompts inside their chats. The Canva app for ChatGPT facilitates workflows such as generating design types, editing and translating text, and searching existing assets, all within the ChatGPT interface.
Design in chat
The integration leverages the Canva AI Connector, bringing Canva's design tools into AI-driven chat environments. With this new capability, users can instruct ChatGPT to create various design assets, from social media posts to detailed presentations, based on the ongoing conversation.
Users can import PDFs or files simply by providing a link and do not need to upload files separately. Designs can be edited at both the individual text element and bulk levels, and the text inside designs can be translated into other languages, enabling more effective communication with global audiences.
The app also enables users to browse, search for, and summarise existing Canva designs and assets within ChatGPT. An upcoming feature will allow autofilling of brand templates with labeled, formatted data generated by AI insights.
Developer features and expansion plans
Canva is amongst the first platforms to work with ChatKit, OpenAI's new tool designed to help build chat interfaces using embeddable components. Through this development, Canva aims to empower its developer community by enabling interaction with developer documentation via chat, aiming for a more intuitive experience in building apps on the Canva platform.
The company's intent is to support work processes as AI agents become dominant in workplaces by embedding the visual design layer into chat environments.
Access to Canva within ChatGPT is designed to be user-friendly. Prompts such as "Canva, help me build this presentation" can activate the application, and ChatGPT may also suggest Canva for relevant tasks, such as pitching deck creation, to facilitate swift movement from discussion to design.
"AI agents and assistants have become indispensable creative partners, yet current workflows require users to add context or references, creating unnecessary complexity manually," said Anwar Haneef, GM and Head of Ecosystem at Canva. "We're solving for this by meeting users where they are - embedding Canva directly into ChatGPT and the AI tools they use every day so they can create without friction. This is a major step in our vision to empower the world to design by making it simple, secure and accessible to all."
This launch builds on Canva's existing capabilities with the Canva GPT, introduced in 2023, and the Deep Research Connector, launched in June 2025. Canva is establishing itself as a widely accessible creative platform for ChatGPT's extensive user base.
Usage and availability
The press release notes that AI tools on Canva have so far seen usage exceeding 21 billion times among educators, marketers, and creators, highlighting the adoption of AI in creative processes. Today's update is positioned as a way to enhance creativity with design features that are described as fast, intuitive and secure.
The Canva app is now available in English to all logged-in ChatGPT users outside the European Union on Free, Plus, and Pro plans. This makes Canva one of the initial design platforms to enable complete design creation from within ChatGPT.
Canva launched in 2013 and provides a platform for visual communication and collaboration that serves users in more than 190 countries, including enterprises, small businesses, consumers, and students. Its services are underpinned by a library of designer-made content and proprietary AI tools to support design and teamwork needs.
