Anthropic names Chris Liddell to board as AI scrutiny grows

Tue, 17th Feb 2026

Anthropic has appointed former Microsoft Chief Financial Officer and former US government official Chris Liddell to its Board of Directors, adding a senior corporate finance and public-sector figure as scrutiny of artificial intelligence governance grows.

Liddell brings more than three decades of senior leadership across listed companies and public service. His appointment comes as AI developers face increasing calls from regulators, customers and civil society for clearer oversight of safety, transparency and accountability.

Anthropic's board includes Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, Yasmin Razavi, Jay Kreps and Reed Hastings, alongside Liddell. The company is structured as a Public Benefit Corporation, with directors elected by stockholders and the Long-Term Benefit Trust.

Board focus

Anthropic describes itself as a developer of AI systems with an emphasis on responsible development. It has become one of the best-funded independent AI companies, competing with major US technology groups and other well-capitalised startups.

Board appointments have taken on added significance as policymakers consider rules for model development, deployment and risk management. Directors with public policy and corporate governance experience are increasingly common across the sector.

"Chris has spent his career at the intersection of technology, public service, and governance-and has a track record of helping organizations get those things right when the stakes are highest," said Daniela Amodei, Anthropic co-founder and president.

"As AI's impact on society grows, that kind of judgement and experience is exactly what we seek on our board," she said.

Corporate credentials

Liddell has held several senior finance roles at large industrial and technology businesses, including Chief Financial Officer at Microsoft, General Motors and International Paper.

He also served in the US federal government as Deputy White House Chief of Staff during President Trump's first term. He was Director of the American Technology Council, where his remit included modernising government technology.

Anthropic has not outlined any specific committee roles tied to the appointment. Directors with finance backgrounds typically help oversee budgets, capital planning, audit processes and risk governance, particularly in fast-growing markets.

"My career has taught me the governance of transformative technologies matters as much as the technologies themselves," said Liddell.

"Anthropic's approach-building AI that's both capable and responsible-is critical for our future, and it's why I'm proud to be joining the company's Board," he said.

Wider roles

Liddell also serves as a director of Commonwealth Fusion Systems and the Council on Foreign Relations. He has participated in several presidential transition teams and has written a book on the topic.

Outside corporate and government work, he has held philanthropic and non-profit roles. He is chairman of New Zealand's largest environmental foundation and has served on several non-profit boards, including the New Zealand Rugby Union.

In 2016, Liddell was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and philanthropy.

The appointment adds another prominent name to Anthropic's board as the company expands its AI products and partnerships while engaging in policy debates over the governance of advanced AI systems.
